    • The HOST - Part 1

She stood facing the back wall of the cell as the men stepped away, closing the door whose automatic locks could be heard clanging throughout. Still, the rest of the patients were silent, watching. Nathan knew, from his brief experience here, that this was utterly bizarre and potentially bad. These people all lived inside their own heads, their own demons haunting them, torturing them day and night, and the sounds of their psychotic screams and laughter was a constant here. At the moment, however, all was quiet and he longed for the sounds of their insanity.

      Specimen 01 - Jane D

Then, just as he and Martin started away from her cell, from behind the door of number five came a loud crack, like the breaking of tree limbs, followed by a piercing scream and the sound of tearing cloth. The smell of blood burst from from the room as the two men stood wide eyed at what was happening. As Martin approached the window, Nathan whispered, “Don't! Trust me, whatever is going on in there, you don't want to...”

His words were too late. Martin stood stock still at the window, his eyes wide from the horror as he saw the girls chest burst forth, sternum and ribs cracking, flesh heaving then tearing, the front of the straight jacked and the gown beneath shredding away at the gnashing of razor like teeth, then falling to the ground as the thing burst forth. Her body tossed from side to side, front to back as the thing emerged from her, an elongated neck that seemed to be attached somehow to her insides, with a face that was little more than a mouth of gnarled teeth and hateful eyes.

Martin turned to Nathan with not a word, only a wide eyed look of disbelief and started quickly down the hall toward the elevator. For a moment, Nathan thought about looking through that tiny window, thought about what the hell could have shaken the man so. Sure, he was a rookie. Sure, he'd never been down to level C, but this had been a piece of cake errand and with the exception of the bizarre noises, the quietest he'd ever seen here. Maybe just a quick look?

He joined Martin at the elevator, thankful for having the good sense not to indulge his curiosity. The doors opened and the two ascended back to the main floor.

As they exited the elevator, Martin, removed the lanyard from his neck that held his key card to the facility and proceeded toward the main doors.

I actually got the chance to read this several times when I was putting the pages together, then I sat down and read it all again in one go. FANTASTIC! You had my skin crawling there. And Toodles.... OMG!!!! Worthy of his own spin off story.

        Can't wait for Part 2!

Actually, Rebekah has been writing for sometime now about the Cirque Du Macabre and it's just amazing stuff that can be taken on it's own or as being loosely linked to the fate of dear old Toodles as shown here. Thanks for the kind words on the Host so far. If you like what's here, you'll love where it goes in the next installment! -Les

I didn't write this little beauty, Les did. My writings will actually have to be cleaned up a lot due to it being too graphic.

Wait until you read the rest....it only gets better.

Deliciously grisly! Excellent artwork to go with an excellent story. I especially like the clown image and I really do like this character of Nathan. ;D I love me some insane asylum stories! <3

Thanks for checking it out, everyone! As Syyd and Eric know, this is just the beginning, the first piece of a story that takes you through my little world, and there is a LOT more on the way. The next installment should have all of it's art finished and be going through proofing sometime in the next couple weeks, so keep an eye out for it. The Mythos/Specimen product lines are my way of giving users the tools to literally walk around and stage their own ideas inside this gigantic universe of Lovecraftian horror that bobs around my brain pretty much 24-7. This first installment of "The Host" is just the beginning little piece of what is, basically, a full length novel that I am re-writing/writing/polishing for this special online publishing method here at RDNA. Some of what is contained within has been with me for years, some of it is very recent, but it all comes together to give you the first full journey into the world as my imagination interprets a great deal of it. It can be a very bleak place, but in that you can bet you'll also find humanity and heroism that only can come from people dealing with the deepest of stresses, the most unspeakable of horrors. Thanks for coming along so far, both in reading the story and in supporting the art and for-sale content tied to it all. The ride may be a dark one, but it's nice see a few new companions along the way. -Les

I agree with the other comments completely. I can't wait to see where this story goes from here. Hopefully a little revenge for some badly treated patients and some justice for others.

... just finished reading it. Cant wait to see more of this. Just fantastic, Les. Superb. Love it. Publish it. Even when i have to read sometimes two or three times the same phrase to understand what it means (english is not my main language) i enjoyed it a lot. And that awesome artwork... Could be a must graphic novel.

I just finished reading the full first release and (I know you can't see but...) I'm giving you a standing ovation!!! You really know how to tickle the imagination. Going into the human psyche is the most exquisite form of horror. Lovecraft would have been thrilled with this novel!!! Excellent work!!!!

I am very impressed. I've read mythos stories starting with Lovecraft and on up to the present. Your writing fits in well. I look forward to reading more of this.
